  • Lonely Planet - Covers exotic locations and adventure travel that are a trademark of this travel book publisher.
  • National Geographic People and Places - Plan your next trip and find maps, guidebooks, photos, and other information.
  • Rough Guides Travel - Explore many destinations around the world from the creators of the print version.
  • Tourism Offices Worldwide Directory - List of tourist bureaus throughout the world.
  • Travel - Gateway to individual travel topics and country information from About.com.
  • USA CityLink - This site leads you to great information on U.S. cities and states, information on relocating, homes for sale, tourist sites, restaurants and hotels, apartments and rentals.

  • Canadian Air Transport Security Authority - For packing tips and the latest security measures in place at Canadian airports.
  • CDC - Travelers' Health - From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - travel advisory information, vaccine recommendations and travel health tips.
  • CNN.com/weather - Enter city name or zip code to get forecasts for cities around the world.
  • Passport Canada - Information from the Canadian Passport Office on how to obtain a passport, fees, etc.
  • Service Canada Travel - Travel related programs and services for Canadians including tourism links, official travel reports by country and information for Canadians travelling outside Canada. Individual subjects include travel in Canada, travel abroad, and living, working, and retiring abroad - from Service Canada.
  • Travel Health Online - From a group of travel medical practitioners around the globe to enable safe and healthy travel.
  • Travel Reports & Warnings - Consult the Country Travel Reports before your departure to find out about security and safety conditions, health questions and entry requirements for the country or countries you are going to - from Consular Affairs, Foreign Affairs Canada.
  • World Clock - Time Zones - A guide to time zones, calendars and more. Determine local times around the world.
  • World Health Organization (WHO) - WHO is the United Nations' specialized agency for health: one objective is to advise on infectious diseased around the globe.
  • XE.com: The Universal Currency Converter ® - Convert any amount into the required currency.

  • Atlas of Canada - Formerly the National Atlas of Canada, this site provides maps incorporating data on a variety of topics, e.g. environment, people, climate change and economic. Check out the excellent new feature consisting of virtual topographic maps.
  • Canadian Atlas Online - Click on Explore the maps to use this interactive atlas from Canadian Geographic.
  • Google Earth - Google Earth combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips. Requires download.
  • Google Local - Combines directions, maps and satellite imagery. Use the Hybrid button to superimpose the map over the satellite image.
  • Live Search Maps - The beta (test) version of a new Microsoft product featuring a new technology with new features for online mapping. Search for places, plan a route and get directions.
  • MapQuest - Maps, driving directions, city guides for Canadian and U.S. cities. Even live traffic reports for selected U.S. cities. A useful feature is the TripQuest page which maps the shortest route between two points.
  • MSN Maps & Directions - Find maps, get directions.
  • Yahoo! Canada Maps - Use to find maps and directions to Canadian destinations. Enter address, intersection, city, province or postal code to find a location, or use driving directions.

  • National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations - Resources on sustainable tourism and what is now being called geotourism: tourism that supports the geographical character of the place being visited - its environment, culture, heritage, aesthetics, and the well-being of its citizens. Includes information for tourism professionals, travelers, and residents.

  • Hostelling International - Information on joining, and a listing of worldwide hostels.
  • Hostels.com - Premier web site about hostels and budget travel with sections on what's new in hostelling, travel books and bulletin boards to find travel companions.
  • Hostelz.com - Listings and reviews for over 2000 cities worldwide. This site is created and maintained by young backpackers who share both good and bad experiences about where they have been.
  • International Home Exchange Network (IHEN) - An international list of home exchanges and private rentals.

 

Learning the Language

 

  • AltaVista Babel Fish Translation - Provides online text and web page language translation from many languages to as many languages.
  • Living Language - Helpful phrases in several languages under topics suitable for travelers.

  • Elderhostel - Features both program and accommodation information for the world. (Note: Central, and all BPL branches maintain subscriptions to the Elderhostel newspapers: U.S. & Canada Programs and International Programs.)
  • Routes to Learning Canada - Routes to Learning Canada (formerly Elderhostel Canada) is a not for profit organization committed to promoting and providing high quality life-long learning opportunities for mature adults and their families, in Canada and abroad, through travel and other learning activities. RLC is the provider of Elderhostel programs in Canada.
  • ElderTreks - Adventure travel around the globe for travelers over 50.

  • United States Local and State Transit Links - A gateway to American public transit websites. Includes links to transit information by state, region and city.
  • VIA Rail Canada - Passenger trains to Vancouver, Edmonton, and points east including Toronto and Montreal are operated by VIA Rail Canada.

This Web site was developed by Transport Canada in partnership with other federal government departments, provincial governments and not-for-profit associations.
  • Access-Able Travel Source - Information on travel agents, cruise lines, tour packages, newsletter and bulletin boards. The focus is on disabled access.
  • Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH) - Information on travel and access under numerous topics.
  • petswelcome.com - Lodging listings for over 25,000 hotels, B&Bs, ski resorts, campgrounds, and beaches that are pet-friendly. Pet travel tips as well.
  • Travel Pets - An online directory to pet-friendly hotels.
