  • Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online - An excellent site for Canadian biographical information from Library and Archives Canada. It includes people who died from 1000-1930.
  • The Free Dictionary - Multiple dictionaries including English, medical, legal, financial, computer dictionaries, thesaurus, acronyms - or try your luck at a spelling bee.
  • iTools - Database consisting of the following Internet tools: dictionaries, maps, quotation sources, telephone directories, translator programs, and financial tools.
  • Librarians' Index to the Internet (LII) - Dictionaries - Scroll down the page and look for the heading Ready Reference and Quick Facts and select Dictionaries. Link to English, foreign language and specialized subject dictionaries.
  • Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - SEP is a free online encyclopedia of philosophy run and maintained by Stanford University. A long term fundraising plan is in place to help preserve open access to the Encyclopedia, supported by many university libraries and library consortia.
  • Wikipedia - The content of Wikipedia is free, written collaboratively by people from all around the world. This website is a wiki, which means that anyone with access to an Internet-connected computer can edit, correct, or improve information throughout the encyclopedia, simply by clicking the edit this page link.
  • yourDictionary.com - The Bucknell University site has a search engine for English language terms based on "Webster's Collegiate Dictionary." It also links to over 400 dictionaries in 130 languages, and to specialized English and multilingual dictionaries.

  • Atlas of Canada - Formerly the National Atlas of Canada, this site provides maps incorporating data on a variety of topics, e.g. environment, people, climate change and economic. Check out the excellent new feature consisting of virtual topographic maps.
  • Canada e-Book - An electronic version of the Canada Year Book.
  • Canadian Atlas Online - Click on Explore the maps to use this interactive atlas from Canadian Geographic.
  • Community Profiles - Select by the Ontario community or region. The information is provided to the Ontario Investment Service by the communities listed on this site.
  • Countries and Regions: Background Notes - Published by the Office of Electronic Information and Publications, U.S. State Department, this site is an excellent resource for profile information on foreign countries. Each profile includes geographic, economic and political information, as well as general statistics.
  • Global Gazetteer - Search for latitude, longitude and other information for place names around the world.
  • WorldFactbook - The CIA's annual country information reference book, providing data for more than 260 countries of the world, including map and flag, geographic, population, government, economic, communication, transportation, military, and transnational issue information for the latest date available.

  • Canada411 - Telephone directory for Canada, including both white and yellow pages.
  • Canada TollFree - This online directory is a great tool for helping you get to free information about products and services from anywhere in Canada. You can search for toll-free numbers connected with businesses or services by using regular words like "hotel", "fish", or "car". Or you can search by the name of the business as well.
  • Infobel World - Telephone Directories - Link to international phone books, both yellow and white pages. Use to find e-mail addresses and other useful links are here as well.
  • InfoSpace Canada - Contains links to Canadian business and people finder, reverse lookup sites.
  • InfoSpace - Yellow Pages & White Pages - U.S. telephone directories on the Web with yellow and white pages. You can also find area codes and ZIP code lookup, map and directions, e-mail search and world directories.
  • myTELUS Phone Book - White and yellow pages for Alberta and B.C. including reverse lookup.
  • Postal Code Look-up - From Canada Post, the electronic version of the postal code books.
  • Royal Mail's Online Postcode Finder - The postal code look up for Great Britain.
